Very interesting. I had a problem with my nokia lumia 920, the touchscreen stopped responding after a month of used, I first thought it was software, sent it to repair anyway and they changed my screen. I went back to my office and started the phone, it worked for a few minuts then the same problem appeared. I put the screen cover back to bring it back to the store and then i notice that the screen works again! I work in a laboratory and I am often in contact with electrical devices and electricity in general so I thought about static electricity. I took of the cover, tried, and it didnt work. I touched something grounded, and the screen was working again. SO I am quiet confident that static electricity affects capacitive screen. I will carry more investigations on the subjects.

Interesting. Like I mentioned in a previous comment, I haven't had this problem on my Samsung phones so far. If it does happen again, this is worth a shot. TFS.

My trusty Pre 3 just jumped to its death, forcing me to transition to Androidland. For the next two weeks, this means resuscitating my mother-in-law's old Milestone, whose ghost touching problem had become so bad that the device was unusable. I resolved to fix it and hit the interwebs...I stopped short of dismantling it and replacing the screen. What worked (temporarily!) for me? Rubbing it along a wool sleeve. It makes no sense to me; do you have any ideas? More details here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1041943&page=5

Mickey, it depends on the particular model of phone I guess. I've had two Samsung phones since (Galaxy SL and now Galaxy Nexus), and haven't had the same problem. Maybe the Milestone was particularly vulnerable.

Hi, I just want to say thank you for this entry. I found it while searching for any info on how static electricity affects capacitive screens, I basically wanted to see if anyone had any kind of problems with such screens due to the static they carry on themselves. I haven't purchased a capacitive screen cell phone yet, but I'm considering it, and I seem to carry a lot of static on myself, esp in winter :( I actually get a shock every time I open the car door or touch the tap in the bathroom, etc... I wonder if you have any new info on the problem, I mean, if the screens are now made to be safer from static electricity, or is it just up to the user to take precautions?

this started happening to me yesterday. from what i can tell this is heat issue that stems from poor design. i will explain why. when i turn on the droid it works, but i can easily heat it up by watching a video or using the web for a while, then it starts to malfunction. the malfunctions are all in the bottom center over the touchscreen g/v/t/space keys. my belief is that, under that area is an electronic component that is heating up most likely a bus from the cpu/gpu. it heats up under use and the heat goes thru the display from the bottom causing the touchscreen to malfunction.

i believe this is a known issue and extremely common on the droid and droid2. not sure about other droids. if you call verizon or any vendor, they have instructed their support people to blatantly lie to you and tell you "its the humidity" or some other bullsh*t and act like they haven't heard that exact problem from half of the thousands of people that have called them every day.

i have tried many things to fix this. factory reset, remove sdcard, use original battery or charger, cleaning screen. NOTHING works. the only thing i can do is not use the web or do anything to cause the droid to heat up.

its a shame because i really like this phone but this is a major deal-breaker.
